Snowfall brings warnings to drive safely

.
The first winter storm of the season is typically met with a flurry of crashes as motorists once again struggle to become accustomed to driving on snow and ice.

The storm, which exceeded expectations, is to blame for a larger-than-normal number of crashes, La Crosse Sheriff’s Capt. Mike Horstman said.
Sheriff’s staff responded to 35 crashes between Saturday evening and Sunday evening, including seven that involved injuries, none life-threatening, Horstman said.

The storm caused more serious crashes in neighboring counties, including a fatality in Winona County.

Kathleen Jo Wiltgen, 21, of Winona died about 1:30 a.m. Saturday after rolling her Dodge Stratus off Hwy. 43 in Winona County, the Minnesota State Patrol reported.

In Allamakee County, a man and a woman suffered critical injuries when their pickup crossed the center line and collided with a semi-truck at about 4:41 p.m. Sunday on Hwy. 9 east of Churchtown, Iowa.

Two people were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries after the vehicle they were traveling in rolled over and came to rest in a creek about 6:10 p.m. Sunday in Vernon County.

" They say it was the snow that caused all of the accidents. We did not hear of any accidents in the fields, nor on the snow covered ice on the waters, nor the snow on the roof tops, or the many lawns that had ample amounts. Only on the roads where the drivers that refused to slow down or drive accordingly to the conditions. They were the cause of the accidents not the snow. "
