The storm, which exceeded expectations, is to blame for a larger-than-normal number of crashes, La Crosse Sheriff’s Capt. Mike Horstman said.
Sheriff’s staff responded to 35 crashes between Saturday evening and Sunday evening, including seven that involved injuries, none life-threatening, Horstman said.
The storm caused more serious crashes in neighboring counties, including a fatality in Winona County.
Kathleen Jo Wiltgen, 21, of Winona died about 1:30 a.m. Saturday after rolling her Dodge Stratus off Hwy. 43 in Winona County, the Minnesota State Patrol reported.
In Allamakee County, a man and a woman suffered critical injuries when their pickup crossed the center line and collided with a semi-truck at about 4:41 p.m. Sunday on Hwy. 9 east of Churchtown, Iowa.
Two people were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries after the vehicle they were traveling in rolled over and came to rest in a creek about 6:10 p.m. Sunday in Vernon County.
