La Crosse mayoral field grows

.
A crowded field continues to form as 24-year-old Jordan Bishofsky announced Tuesday he will join a half-dozen candidates in the race for La Crosse mayor.

Bishofsky isn’t the youngest to join the pool, which includes 23-year-old Matt Harter.
Growing up in government housing on the city’s North Side, Bishofsky said he’s seen industry boom and decline. “There’s a lot of people running right now, and some are relatively new to the area. I’ve seen what’s come and gone from this town.”

Despite his age, he has “a good understanding of how government works,” Bishofsky said. “It’s something I study quite passionately.”

Bishofsky’s early platform outlines some unconventional initiatives, such as holding down the city’s tax rate to free up tax dollars for schools and instituting a citywide challenge to start a moped manufacturing business.

He’d also create jobs by luring the video game industry to La Crosse with the state’s 25 percent film incentives.

“The video game industry would be a very viable sector for this town,” he said. “It’s better to be proactive with changing industries than reactive.”

A graduate of Central High School, Bishofsky has worked the past four years for U.S. Cellular.

Other candidates

Jim Bloedorn, District 7 council member

Matt Harter, Harter’s Quick Clean-up

Mark Johnsrud, mayor

Dorothy Lenard, District 8 council member

Mick Lesky, real estate agent

Gary Padesky, La Crosse public works employee

" Just curious why the Trib lists the candidates and their professions except for the ones who are current city council members, I know Dorothy Leonard works at Viterbo, why don't they list her profession or Jim B's? Just curious about that.... "

" The fact that that so many people are willing to take on what will surely be a well funded Johnsrud candidacy indicates potential candidates have little fear of the power of his incumbency. They sense his vulnerability. I wouldn't be surprised if the field continues to grow in the next week to over ten total. I might expect someone from Citizens for Responsible Government, the local taxpayer advocacy group sponsoring the recent anti-city ambulance petition drive to consider a run as well. Stay tuned for a very interesting spring election! "

" Put aside your pens, your exuberance, your endorsements! the tribune editors have already decided who they will endorse! They know that their favorite son, Mark , doesnt have a chance in hell. They will cite his commercial developments but acknowledge his unpopularity. They will name Dorothy Leonard , "man of the year", in an effort to get her ball rolling. Look for it, You can take this suggestion to the bank, The editors have already deleted a prior post suggesting this. Its so much fun to read the trib editors small minds! "

" Selling cell phones....running a city...the correlation there is? What I know of this "young man" I would never vote for him. Unless you want to have underage parties in the mayor's office and have him provide and then when you get in trouble he will get you off. This is the truth. "

" Now, instead of new carpet, we get a kid that sits and plays video games all day. Age doesn't matter; however experience does. If this guy can sell cell phones to people that do not need them, what is he going to try and sell to the taxpayers that we don't need? "

" That's it I'm In! Fatbastard for Mayor! I am for building the lower income areas of La Crosse, Less Overtime for City Employees, Holding the Police Dept accountable for the Motto which if I remember correctly is to "Protect and Serve". Which does include more patrols within the lower income areas, making their presence known for more than parking tickets and moving violations... Yes Fatbastard For Mayor. "

" get any one of them in there so Mark Johnsrud gets out of there and can finally learn to sit back and watch and learn how to lower taxes on property, as wel as budget the city better "
