Water nitrate levels prompt warning in Trempealeau

.
TREMPEALEAU — Officials are warning residents not to give village water to infants 6 months or younger due to high nitrate levels.

A water sample collected from a village well in October had a nitrate level higher than the 10 milligrams per liter maximum, said Village Administrator Travis Cooke.
The water still is considered safe for older children and adults, Cooke said. He cautioned against boiling the water, as that won’t decrease the nitrate level.

Trempealeau is constructing new wells in a treatment facility, but those won’t be completed before fall 2009, he said.

“Unless our nitrate levels go down — which we don’t know — we have to keep an ongoing advisory and send it out every three months,” Cooke said.

Residents with infants 6 months or younger should call the village office at (608) 534-6434, he said. The village hopes to be able to distribute bottled water to them in the future.

" Pregnant women shouldn't drink water with high nitrates either. I had to buy a $100 filter to drink our well water. "

" Our unsustainable Monsanto style farming practices will make this common over the entire midwest. This is old news in parts of Iowa. Our clean tap water as a source of American pride and the sign of a developed country is on the wane. "

" We are going to spend 2.5 million to correct this problem when a little bottled water for 5 percent of the population is the answer. Government and the DNR are stupid and out of control. "
