DNR: Wisconsin deer kill down 20 percent

.
WAUSAU, Wis. — Hunters killed 276,985 whitetail deer during Wisconsin’s nine-day gun season, down 20 percent from a year ago based on preliminary counts, the state Department of Natural Resources reported Tuesday.

“The down numbers may mean the population is moving toward goal. That is a good thing, and that hunting is having a positive effect on deer herd management,” DNR deer expert Keith Warnke said. “If this is true, as populations get toward goals, lower harvests like this will become the norm.”
The season ended Sunday.

According to the DNR, hunters registered 178,145 antlerless deer — down 19 percent from a year ago — and 98,840 bucks — down 21 percent.

Killing antlerless deer is key to checking the growth of the overpopulated herd because it means the number of does is being reduced.

Of the five regions in the state, only one — south central — killed more deer than a year ago, the DNR said. The number was up 3 percent.

The DNR estimated up to 1.7 million whitetail deer roamed the fields and woods this fall — about 100,000 fewer than a year ago.

Warnke said the preliminary registration figures suggest two things:

  • The preseason herd estimates in some areas of the state were too high. Perhaps more deer died during a harsher winter and fewer healthy fawns were born.

  • The earn-a-buck regulation in major portions of the state requiring hunters to kill an antlerless deer to qualify to shoot the more coveted buck are working in lowering deer numbers.

“Think about it from the upside. We still have a very high harvest in Wisconsin and very strong deer hunting opportunity when you look around,” he said.

None of the typical variables in the annual hunt can account for the drop in deer killed, Warnke said.

“The weather this year was pretty good,” he said. “There is nothing that is glaring to me about weather, the late season or Packers games that can be accountable for all of the preliminary decline. Licenses were stable.”

In fact, the DNR sold about 1,000 more hunting licenses this season, putting 642,419 hunters into the field.

Adam Hickson, owner of Northern Waters Angling and Archery near Conover, said his store registered 207 deer this year — 234 fewer than a year ago.

“What exactly does that number tell me? There is half the deer I think. It only makes sense,” he said. “The number of hunters were there. We have done exactly what the DNR has wanted us to do — harvest as many deer as we can.”

Many hunters were disappointed, some calling it “the worst year in their memory,” he said.

Hickson said he wasn’t surprised by the drop, given there’s also more natural predators for deer in the area, including wolves.

“An unsuccessful hunter who sees 50 deer would probably be more happy than a successful hunter who sees one,” he said. “Being angry at the DNR is a constant. They have to revise their numbers, and I believe they will.”

Near Eau Claire, The Welcome Mat registered 241 deer, compared with 311 a year ago, bartender Tim Wick said.

“Most people were fairly disappointed because a lot of them hadn’t seen nearly as many deer as they normally had,” he said. “I don’t know what the cause of it was. We just didn’t see as many hunters either. That probably prevented the deer from being pushed.”

The news was better in west central Wisconsin.

Steve Wyss, owner of Hatfield’s Sports Shop in Jackson County, said his store registered 348 deer, down just 6 percent from a year ago.

“Most hunters were very satisfied,” he said. “We had several parties that filled up with bucks. It seemed that everybody was satisfied.”

There are still more chances to shoot a deer in Wisconsin.

A hunt for hunters who use muzzleloaders started Monday and continues through Dec. 10. That’s followed by a four-day statewide antlerless-only hunt that begins Dec. 11.

During a four-day antlerless-only season in October, hunters shot at least 32,000 deer, Warnke said.

    By the numbers

In La Crosse County, hunters registered 3,775 deer, 2,447 antlerless and 1,328 bucks. That was 5.7 percent fewer deer than were taken in the 2007 season.

Numbers from other area counties included: Crawford, 4,056 deer registered, with 1,105 bucks and 2,951 antlerless, down 7 percent from 2007; Jackson, 8,002, with 2,598 bucks and 5,404 antlerless, down 17.6 percent; Monroe, 6,365, with 2,143 bucks and 4,222 antlerless, down 6 percent; Trempealeau, 7,258, with 2,283 bucks and 4,975 antlerless, down 24 percent; and Vernon, 6,723, with 2,059 bucks and 4,664 antlerless, down 9 percent.

" Lots of positive comments especially about the fact that deer have gone nocturnal more this year than usual. Makes it tough to shoot them. That little bit of snow on Tuesday showed lots of tracks but finding the deer proved tough. Still it was fun to be out with family enjoying the outdoors, beats having to go to work. "

" Hey Badger, You better read the regs again because it is legal to shine deer, You just have to follow the rules listed on the page you said. "

" Leave it to turbocharged to be on here whining about land owners. Nice touch throwing in the "on my farm". Yeah, I believe that, wink wink. If you owned any land you certainly wouldn't be on here telling people what to do with theirs. If you do own a farm, do you want your neighbors telling you they don't want you planting corn anymore, just let it grow into grass? No, then why tell them how to hunt? I know I know, you hate it when people do well and can buy nice things. Spread the wealth eh buddy? *playing worlds smallest violin for you turbocharged* "

2hoots, Check page 9 of the regs at the bottom of the page. Looks pretty black and white to me?
Of course, I tend to read the regs BEFORE I go hunting! "

" I hunt on public land up in BRF, and this year I saw a total of 10 deer opening weekend, I did get 1 but it was a small nubbing buck. The only reason the number is where it's at is because a lot of people got tired of waiting for a good size deer and just started shooting what they saw. What happened to the days when you could pick out that nice size buck or doe. But I don't think there are that many deer out. (my conspiracy theory) the insurance companies don't want to pay out for deer accidents so they have partnered up with the DNR to reduce the number of deer. Well if people would watch the roads and shoulders of the road when they were driving we wouldn't have such an issue. "

" In my area....the deer are there. They run rampant at night. The problem is that almost all the farms around mine are owned by doctors/lawyers/big shots from the bigger cities who come in and have either one or two guys hunting 400+ Acres. As few as 3 years ago we would make drives on all these farms and have close to 20 deer by the end of the season between 8 guys. This year...we got 3!

Granted it is these peoples right to sit on 400+ Acres by themselves...but the deer lay where they aren't and don't move till night. We got three deer between 8 of us and of the farms around us...only 2 people got 1 deer each. Pathetic when a 5 mile drive at night you see 5-10 deer. "

" In my opinion, there's only one thing you need in order to have an excellent year: being able to go.

Once I figured that out, sitting on a stand for hours on end was much easier. Seeing a deer became a bonus. Punching a ticket (buck or doe) is a jackpot.

I've had opening days seeing over 100 deer, not seeing any at all, and this year seeing 19. All of them were excellent opening days.

It's not about how many deer you see, how big a buck you got, or even what the weather was like. It's all about if you get to go.

Enjoy your next year's season! "

Leonidas wrote on Dec 3, 2008 7:32 AM:

" The deer weren't even in the woods toward the end of the season. We found them lying in the tall grass in the open areas. We wouldn't see any during the day, but at night we'd shine and they'd be running all over. And by the way, where in the regulation book does it say that everyone that buys a license is guaranteed a deer. I know you have to be a lawyer to understand that book, but I'm pretty sure that's not in there. "

" you have to stay in the woods if you want a deer there not at kwik trip next year bring plenty of clothes pack a lunch and stay out there the people leaving the woods and comming back will push the deer right to you "
