“Our partner organizations have requested
51 percent more volunteers and funding than last year,” Lewis said.
That means United Way needs volunteers to serve on teams that will determine which programs get funding, she said.
United Way funds 65 programs, and many of their partner agencies are having their budgets cut, she said.
“It’s frustrating because not only are we not meeting our campaign goal, but we’re also not seeing the volunteers we need,” Lewis said.
This year’s campaign goal is $2 million, she said, with 1.3 million already raised.
“There are people who need help,” said Tom Brock, senior vice president at Ultra Federal Credit Union, who has been on the United Way board for five years.
“And the nice thing about the United Way is how many agencies they support,” Brock said.
Lewis thinks the work United Way does saves lives.
“We’re not giving up on getting volunteers or making our campaign goal,” Lewis said.
