Scenic byway proposed for Hwy. 33 from La Crosse to Portage

.
Citizens for a Scenic Wisconsin is proposing Hwy. 33 from La Crosse to Portage become a state and nationally designated scenic byway, its executive director said Thursday.

Charley Weeth of La Crosse spoke to about 30 people at a Western Wisconsin Public Scenic Seminar at the Radisson Hotel. It was held by his organization, which has more than 1,000 members and says it works to preserve and protect scenic Wisconsin. The La Crosse Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, Downtown Mainstreet Inc. and UW-Extension helped hold the event.

The byway would include 114 miles of Hwy. 33 in six counties. “It’s a spectacularly scenic highway,” Weeth said.

Scenic byway designation is a tool to increase tourism, attract businesses, and recruit and retain employees, he said. And federal grants can be sought for projects. Weeth suggested creating a steering committee of representatives along the route.

Wisconsin’s only designated scenic byway is the Great River Road along the Mississippi River (primarily Hwy. 35) between Prescott, Wis., and Dubuque, Iowa. An effort is under way to designate Hwy. 60 between Prairie du Chien and Lodi as a scenic byway.

" Call fellow county citizens Suburban Vultures, adding red lights and stop signs on every corner, promoting gridlock, road rage and unsafe streets while calling for tollways for Bliss road and anyone trying to visit Lax is not enough? Now these control-freaks want to force their views on the same people they insulted and forced out of the city due to excessive spending, taxes and interference! Mind your OWN business Charley! "

" Great, Charley wasn't happy just annoying the citizens of Lax, now he has to butt in on county issues too! "

" What's all the fuss about? I looked up what a these guys are about and all they seem to want to do is keep things looking nice. Highway 33 is a wonderful road if you want to seem some great scenery and meet some nice people. I also looked up a scenic byway and it isn't going to choke off traffic or be flooded with tourists. Highway 35 is already a scenic byway and I drive it all the time. There isn't much traffic on it except in town and even that isn't bad compared to other places. "

" All those sharp corners and hills and lack of a real shoulder are what gives that road its character. I absolutely enjoy driving HWY 33 for many reasons. I love the scenery. I enjoy driving the sharp corners. There is Leo and Leonas on 33 too. I don't enjoy the drive when someone thinks they have to drive the road at 65 MPH. They hang on your tail for miles, trying to pass. We don't need a gaggle of tourists on 33. The road was designed for local travel. I don't want the road changed, nor do I want it infested with tourists. "

" Urban vultures like Weeth should mind their own business and stick to the city limits! We don't like Weeth's group in Lax, why would we want him to push our neighbors around too? "

" This is great, as long as they make it a four or six lane road, with exit ramps and frontage roads for farm equipment. Also, round off the sharp turns and increase run-off areas. "

" Leonidas-

Out in the Dakotas people will pass on the shoulder. I've seen it done. Keep that in mind. This state is full of drivers who need to take a trip to Denver or Chicago and see what real traffic is. "

" I agree,I think, with Leonidas. This is a nice idea, but between the auto traffic, summer motorcycles, tractors and other misc. farm equipment, then the further east towards Cashton you go you add horses and buggies, not such a good idea. It's a great road, until the LaX hill, but some of those 35-40mph corners on a 55 mph hwy sneak up on you, especially at night. "

" Please...Noooo! There are already enough people driving under 40 mph on 33 that never once thought of pulling over to let faster cars go by. "
