Beloit superintendent Lowell Holtz said he will resign his current position as of June 30. The next superintendent of Public Instruction takes office July 1.
Concordia University professor Van Mobley and deputy state superintendent Tony Evers also have announced plans to seek the nonpartisan position. Current state superintendent Libby Burmaster is not seeking a third term.
A Feb. 17 primary will narrow the field to two candidates. The election is April 7.
The state superintendent is responsible for governing Wisconsin’s public schools, administering state and federal aid, and offering guidance to teachers and administrators.
