Alice (Gilbeck) Amundson
CASHTON — Alice (Gilbeck) Amundson, 91, of Cashton died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at Norseland Nursing Home in Westby. Funeral services are pending with Torkelson Funeral Home in Cashton.

Eunice Arlene Bell

ONALASKA — Eunice Arlene Bell, 81, of Onalaska died Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center. She was born Jan. 21, 1927, in Melvina to Edwin N. and Vera M. (Steele) Erickson. Eunice married Ronald Bell on June 1, 1945, in Iowa. She loved her flowers and garden and babysat for numerous children for 10 years. Eunice loved her family and lived for her children and husband. She was a kind and loving person who was loved by everyone she met.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Ronald; four children, Walter (Rose) Bell of Onalaska, Vera (Ernest) Sanders of Onalaska, Arlene Boisen of Onalaska and LeRoy Bell of Louisiana; 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Ronald Jr. and Edwin; a granddaughter, Lesa Boisen; and three brothers, Alvin, Ervin and Lester.

Private family services will be held. Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse is in charge of arrangements.

Marliss Ann Bendel

Marliss Ann Bendel, 68, of La Crosse died Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, at her home. Funeral services will be announced by Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse.

Patricia (Thomas) Griffin

SEATTLE — Patricia M. Griffin passed away peacefully on Dec. 17, 2008, in Everett, Wash. Born June 14, 1939, in Minneapo-lis, she wed Burton J. Griffin in Duluth, Minn., where she grew up. Burt’s career took them west, where after spending 27 years in Troy, Mont., they eventually settled in the Seattle area. Together they raised five beautiful girls.

Pat is survived locally by her sister, Terry Thomas, who will miss her immensely.

She is also survived by her husband, Burton; daughters, Terry (Dave) Orcutt and their children, Leah and Steven (Mindy), Tracey (Ben Longley) Griffin and her children, Taylor and Joy (Aaron), Toni Griffin and her children, Kate and Nathan, Kim (Darryl) Lien and their children, Griffin (Nicole) and Jordan, and Jessica Griffin and her children, Jacob, Dylan and Peyton. Pat and Burt recently welcomed their first great-grandchild in September, Shaley Rose Lien. Also surviving is her niece, Kari Anderson; and dear family friends, Judy and Bill Orr of Troy, Mont.; and several aunts and cousins.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Alice Thomas; a brother, Ronald Thomas; and “special parents,” Mike and Vi Laiti.

Affectionately referred to as “The Grizz,” Pat’s greatest love was her family. She was a loving wife, wonderful mom, awesome grandma, loyal friend and the best big sister anyone could ever have. She lived for her children and grandchildren. Spunky and stubborn, she had “the look” that could stop you in your tracks. Above all, we will always remember her for being “the rock of our family.”

A private family gathering was held on Dec. 20, 2008. On June 14, 2009, Pat’s family and friends will gather together to celebrate her life.

Richard ‘Dick’ Hadrian

Richard “Dick” Hadrian, 81, of La Crosse died in Hillview Health Care Center on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2009. He was born in Milwau-kee on July 25, 1927, to Otto and Ida (Wirtsch) Hadrian. He married Theodora “Teddi” (Manos) on Aug. 25, 1951, in St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Milwaukee. Dick had been employed by Andrea Electric of Milwaukee for over 40 years, first as an electrician and later as an estimator for building projects. Dick and Teddi moved to La Crosse in 1995.

Dick is survived by his wife, Teddi of La Crosse; two daughters, Shelley (Darrell) Dickinson of La Crosse and Kim (Joseph) Sanfilippo of Port Washington, Wis.; six grandchildren, Christina (Jeff) Axness of Holmen, Andrew (Shonda) Dickinson and Brian (Bridget) Dickinson, both of La Crosse, Matthew Dickinson with the United States Marine Corps in San Diego, Calif., Michael (Shannon) Sanfilippo of Fredonia, Wis., and Steven “Flip” (Leah) Sanfilippo of Brown Deer, Wis.; six great-grandchildren, with two “in the oven,” Catherine and Dane Axness, Samuel, Nora and Alivia Dickinson and Vincent Sanfilippo.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1201 Main St., Onalaska. The Revs. William Bader and Norris Baumann will officiate. Friends may call from noon Tuesday until the time of services at the church.

Additional funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Chapel of the Flowers at Wisconsin Memorial Park in Brookfield, Wis. Friends may call from 1 p.m. Wednesday until the time of services at the chapel. Burial will be in Wisconsin Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Onalaska or Hillview Health Care Center.

Emilie M. Hanvold

WHITEHALL — Emilie M. Hanvold, 94, of Whitehall died Jan. 2, 2009, at Tri-County Memorial Nursing Home, Whitehall. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Pigeon Falls Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery. Jack Funeral Home in Whitehall is assisting the family.

Michael Allan Johnson

ONALASKA — Michael Allan Johnson, 53, of Onalaska died Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, in his home while in the company of his family, after a yearlong struggle with pancreatic cancer. He was born Oct. 6, 1955, in La Crosse, to Harold and Leatrice (Miles) Johnson. A 1973 graduate of Onalaska High School, Mike was an avid, lifelong volleyball player and a dedicated coach for over 10 years. A loving husband, father and friend, Mike was well known for his wry sense of humor and willingness to help out. He married Leta Gfall on Sept. 9, 1978, in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Eau Claire, Wis. Mike had worked for five years with Burlington Northern Railroad. He then worked for 25 years at Gateway/Fleming Foods and was currently working at DS Electrical Supply until his illness forced him to retire. Mike’s lifelong passions were volleyball, camping, hunting, NASCAR and stock car racing.

He is survived by his wife, Leta; two children, Laura Johnson and Brian Johnson; his father, Harold Johnson; four siblings, Jim (Charlene) Johnson, Thomas (Barbara) Johnson, Sharon (John) Hodge and Lori (Larry) Pipkin; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Leatrice Johnson.

Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Onalaska. A prayer service will be held at 8 p.m. with Deacon Frank Abnet. Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be given to PanCan Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, 2141 Rosecrans Ave., Suite 7000, El Segundo, CA 90245, Onalaska High School Volleyball Program or the donor’s choice.

Ambrose J. Klein

DUBUQUE, Iowa — Ambrose J. Klein, 84, of 485 N. Grandview Ave., Dubuque died peacefully surrounded by his family at 11:50 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, 2009, at Finley Hospital, Dubuque, as the result of a heart attack.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Columbkille’s Church, Dubuque.

Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Dubuque.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at Behr’s, 1491 Main St., Dubuque, with a 3 p.m. parish Wake service.

Ambrose was born May 8, 1924, in Balltown, Iowa, son of Leo Peter and Martha (Boemecke) Klein.

Ambrose married Theresa B. Bormann on Nov. 4, 1947, in Sugar Creek, Iowa. She preceded him in death March 8, 1981. He then married LaVerne D. Denlinger on March 27, 1982, at Grandview Methodist Church, Dubuque. Ambrose farmed in the Bernard, Iowa, area for over 20 years and then moved to Laudeville, Iowa, and eventually to Dubuque in 1982. He was employed at Brown Publishing Company until his retirement in May 1986. Ambrose was a member of St. Columbkille’s Parish. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, card playing and traveling in the motor home. He will be remembered for the jokes he had for every occasion.

His retirement project was designing and building a small truck from parts he collected as he traveled. His little truck was written up in the Telegraph Herald and has been driven in the parades. Ambrose enjoyed spending time and visiting with his friends, relatives, children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, LaVerne Klein; eight children, Diane (Roger) Wardle of East Dubuque, Ill., Jeanette (Shorty) Davis of Dubuque, Lloyd (Cathy) Klein of Dubuque, Dennis Klein of Dubuque, Mary (Wayne) Polsean of Dubuque, Judy (Steve) Herbst of West Salem, Charlie (Pam) Klein of Key West, Iowa, and Karen (Kevin) Arnold of La Crosse; two stepdaughters, Joyce (Gene) Wilkerson of Jackson, Mich., and Donna (Jim) Pfeiler of Peosta, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Grace Dean of Sageville, Iowa; two brothers-in-law, George Mihm of Sherrill, Iowa, and Virgil Nauman of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Mihm and Lila Nauman; and a brother-in-law, Clarence Dean.

The family requests no flowers.

The family would like to thank Dr. Johnson, Dr. Ridgley, Dr. Viner and Dr. Schope, the nurses and staff at Finley Hospital, especially Gloria and Andrea, and all the friends and relatives who stopped to see Ambrose.

Daniel F. Kruse

HARPERS FERRY, Iowa — Daniel F. Kruse, 60, of Harpers Ferry died Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, at Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Living Faith United Methodist Parish in Monona, Iowa. Burial will be in Sixteen Cemetery, rural Monona. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. today at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, Iowa.

Karen M. DRULINER Lampinen

LA CROSSE/PHILIPPINES/DAMASCUS, Ore. — Karen died peacefully at her home in Damascus on Dec. 9, 2008, with her family at her side, ending her 4½-year battle with cancer. Her strong belief and love of God, family and extended church family helped her through all her struggles. She continued to lead Bible study groups, Mom’s support groups and play flute with the church orchestra until two weeks before her death.

She was born Jan. 14, 1948, in La Crosse to Mary M. (Hussa) and Howard Druliner. Karen was a 1966 graduate of La Crosse Central High School and a 1970 graduate of Laurence University in Appleton, Wis. After four years of employment with Laurence University in London, England, as assistant to the administrator and head residence counselor, Karen attended All Nations Christian College in England, graduating in 1976. This was the beginning of a 32-year career as a missionary for OMF International in the Philippines, for which she was sponsored by Gold Hills Church of Ware, England. Karen met the love of her life, David Lampinen, while teaching English and Tagalog to Philippinos and missionaries.

Karen and David were married in the Philippines on Jan. 9, 1988, and continued to reside there until 2003. Karen and David started several missionary churches in the Philippines during their 15 years together there. In 2003 they returned to the states for medical care of their son, Ben, diagnosed with leukemia.

In her adult years, Karen became a great lover of flowers and gardening, having by far the most beautiful flower and vegetable garden in the area according to friends in Oregon.

A memorial service was held Dec. 13 in Damascus at Damascus Community Church with burial in National Cemetery.

Karen is survived by her husband, David Lampinen, and son, Wilbert Lampinen of Damascus; her brother, Bill (Renee) Druliner of Holmen; nephew, Bill (Jessica) Druliner of Milwaukee; a great-niece and nephew; numerous cousins; and friends worldwide.

Karen was preceded in death by her grandparents; parents; son, Ben; uncles, Maurice, Emil and Owen Hussa; aunts, Lillian and Gretchen Hussa; and cousin, Ann Quirk.

A memorial service celebrating Karen’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Jan. 17 at North Presbyterian Church in La Crosse. Pastor Scott Skogen will officiate.

HIXTON — Paul A. Leek, 68, of Hixton, formerly of Eau Claire, Wis., died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2009, at his home. Private family services will be held at a later date. Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home, Hixton, is assisting the family.

Barbetta M. Marcum

ONALASKA — Barbetta M. Marcum, 81, of Onalaska died Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, in Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. Memorial services will be Saturday, Jan. 10, in Blaschke & Schneider Funeral Home, La Crosse. A complete obituary will follow in Thursday’s Tribune.

Beverly K. Sonsalla

WHITEHALL — Beverly K. Sonsalla, 69, of Whitehall, formerly of Green Bay, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. Funeral services will be 7 p.m. today at Edison Funeral Home, Independence. Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday in SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Independence. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
