If there are nights like Wednesday for the UW-La Crosse women’s basketball team — and Hunter realizes there might be — she says so be it. The Eagles’ senior forward knows the end of her college basketball career is closer than she wants it to be.
UW-L’s 70-61 WIAC loss to UW-Whitewater in front of a Mitchell Hall crowd of 125 will do nothing to dampen Hunter’s enthusiasm. She scored 18 of her career-high 30 points over the final 13 minutes as UW-L (9-4, 1-3) cut a 20-point deficit to six (63-57) with less than a minute left.
The thing is, the Eagles needed Hunter’s energy level from everyone in their lineup to beat Whitewater (13-1, 4-1), which is ranked fourth by D3hoops.com. And the Eagles didn’t get that.
Take away Hunter and senior forward Lindsay Wahl, who scored 15 points after sitting out UW-L’s 78-51 win Saturday over UW-Superior due to being academic ineligible, and the Eagles’ offense struggled. The rest of UW-L’s starters combined to score seven points.
“(Nights like Wednesday) are more frustrating than anything,” Hunter said. “We’re always with the good teams in the conference. We can never put it (a complete game) together. We need to play a full 40 minutes.”
