WEST SALEM — Donald “Don” George Gensch, 85, of West Salem passed away peacefully at Hillview Health Care Center, La Crosse, Monday, Nov. 6, 2017.

He was born Aug. 4, 1932, to George and Dorothea (Oldenburg) Gensch. Don graduated from West Salem High School in 1950. He was called for duty from 1956 until 1958, serving with the U.S. Army, being stationed in Korea. After his military service, Don farmed with his dad and later with his brother, Larry. He also was a dedicated school bus driver for the West Salem School District and did so for 49 years. Some of Don’s other hobbies included bowling, as long as his knees would tolerate it, and taking many bus tips with the Glenn Coaches, especially the mystery trips. He married the love of his life, Gloria Zietlow June 2, 1962, and celebrated 55 years of marriage. Another proud moment for Don was when he was on the 13th flight with the Freedom Honor Flight, that he enjoyed very much.

Don is survived by his wife, Gloria; two children, Tammy (Thomas) Lee, Arlyn Gensch; grandchildren, Georgie and Samantha Gensch, Jessica and Brian Lee; brother, Larry (Bonnie) Gensch; sister-in-law, Lois (Milo) Wills; nieces, cousins, other relatives, classmates, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Arlin; sister, Ardelle (John) Low; nephews, Rodney Wills and Randall Gensch.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 11, at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, W3565 Cty Rd. M, Barre Mills. The Rev. Andrew Schultz will officiated. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Following the service military honors were rendered by the Berg Hemker-Olson, American Legion Post 51 of West Salem. Memorials may be given to the St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church or the Gundersen Cancer Treatment Center.

The family would like to thank oncologist and hematologist Dr. Lori Rosenstein, palliative care and the good care he was given at the Hillview Health Care Center.
