Eric Timmons joins the River Valley Media Group this week as the editor of the La Crosse suburban weekly newspapers.

As editor, Timmons hopes to continue serving the region with news and features that make a meaningful connection with readers.

“I love local journalism,” he said. “I believe a good quality newspaper is integral to any community.”

A native of Sligo, a small town on the West Coast of Ireland, Timmons is no stranger to the Driftless region.

“I’ve been camping in the Driftless for years,” Timmons said, adding the region reminds him of the rolling hills of his homeland.

“Eric is a wonderful addition to our team,” said Jennifer McBride, weekly division managing editor. “He is community-minded, has experience and is just an overall good guy.”

“We look forward to incorporating his fresh ideas and new perspectives in the Houston County News and Coulee Courier,” she said.

A graduate of Maynooth University, Timmons majored in French and geography. Soon after college, Timmons, ventured into journalism through an internship at BBC Northern Ireland.

Timmons got his first break as a reporter at the Leinster Express and later became editor of The Kildare Post, both weekly newspapers in Ireland.

In 2008, Timmons moved across the Atlantic and landed in Illinois. There, he put his skills to work as a city and county reporter for the Galesburg Register Mail.

Three years later, Timmons joined the Moline Dispatch in the Quad Cities, where he covered politics for five years.

After a spell working as a communications specialist at John Deere Harvester Works in the Quad-Cities, Timmons decided to return to local journalism as editor of the Coulee Courier and Houston County News.

“I’m really looking forward to getting to know the area and the community,” he said.
