A big season got bigger for the Holmen High School boys tennis team on Thursday, May 18.

The Vikings followed up a very successful dual season by crowning a pair of flight championships at UW-La Crosse on the way to their first MVC team tennis championship in program history.

Senior Nate Gelder won at No. 2 singles, and junior Isaac Burge teamed up with sophomore Colin Heiderscheit to win at No. 3 doubles as Holmen racked up a season score of 55 points (30 in duals, 25 in the tournament) to hold off runner-up Aquinas (47) and third-place Logan (42).

Onalaska, which won the last four conference titles, finished fifth (34) and had a champion in Ben Havlicek at No. 1 singles.

Gelder won both of his matches by 6-3, 6-3 scores and beat Tomah’s Nate Venner for the championship. Burge and Heiderscheit won three matches on the way to the title and knocked off Central’s Max Thornton and Jimmy Sherry 6-2, 6-1 in the finals.

The Vikings also received second-place finishes from freshman Maverick Kulmaczewski at No. 4 singles and junior Matt Labuzzetta and sophomore Sam Gelder at No. 1 doubles.

Logan’s Ian Hofland (No. 3 singles), Tomah’s Luke Grygleski (No. 4 singles), Aquinas’ Ryan Scheidt and Connor Roop (No. 1 doubles) and Central’s Brandon Elwer and Nathan Janvrin (No. 2 doubles) also won championships.

Elwer and Janvrin came back to beat Logan’s Brad Vandenberg and Ben Smith 6-3, 10-8 in their final after losing the first set 6-1.
