WEST SALEM — Ilene M. Buol, 85, of West Salem passed away surrounded by her children, Thursday, June 8, 2017, at the Bland Bekkedal Center for Hospice Care in Viroqua.
She was born May 22, 1932, to Karl and Esther (Young) Nehls. Ilene married La Verne Buol Nov. 26, 1951, and together they had five children, Linda, Barbara, David, Nancy and Daniel. Ilene, La Verne, and their children, operated a family dairy farm in West Salem for many years prior to La Verne’s death. Ilene then enjoyed her beautiful home in the town of West Salem.
In addition to working on the farm, Ilene worked part-time at various places in her lifetime, including the deli at Lakeview Foods and Lloyd’s Speedstop; she also worked at Cottage Grove Nursery & Gifts, before deciding to retire.
Ilene was loved by everyone who had the opportunity to know her. She cherished spending time in the kitchen, where she cooked and baked delicious homemade food that was enjoyed by many. Ilene was a sophisticated lady with a great sense of humor, loved the outdoors, and enjoyed life. She cherished every moment spent with family and friends.
Survivors include three of her children, David Buol of West Salem, Daniel Buol of Sparta and Nancy (Aaron) Opland of Mindoro; her son-in-law, Charles Hemker of West Salem; six beloved grandchildren, Brian (Allison) Hemker of West Salem, Scott Hemker of Appleton, Wis., and Matthew Opland (Maddy Mahlum) and Kaitlyn and Kyle Opland, all of Mindoro; and Tyler Opland of Glastonbury, Conn.; two great-grandchildren, Dagan and Amalia Hemker; her sister, Doris (Dave) Witte; and brother, William Nehls, all of West Salem; her nieces; her beloved neighbors, Kristie and Gary Roesler of West Salem; and her blond lab and companion, Molly.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Karl and Esther Nehls; her husband, La Verne; her daughters, Linda Hemker and Barbara Paul; and son-in-law, Leslie Paul.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 15, at the Presbyterian Church of West Salem, 625 W. Franklin St., West Salem. Pastor Stephanie M. Steiner will officiate. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Bangor. A visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of service Thursday at the church.
