Applefest board is ready for 2018

The Applefest Board of Directors poses with current royalty and new board members at the annual meeting Jan. 13 at the La Crescent American Legion Hall Post 595. Applefest President Verissa Jonsgaard introduced the 2017-18 royalty of Miss La Crescent Natalie Elsen, First Princess Emma Booth and Second Princess Paige Jansen at the meeting. She also thanked 2016-17 royalty members, including Miss La Crescent Lexi Rosendahl, First Princess Becca Covey, Second Princess Morgan Cardosi and Spirit of Fest Melissa Edgar.

Applefest welcomed some new members to its board at its annual meeting last Saturday, while also distributing scholarships to the festival’s 2016-17 royalty and announcing Sarah Dohnalik as the winner of the 2018 President’s Award.

President Verissa Jonsgaard started the annual meeting by extending thanks to the 2016-17 royalty consisting of Miss La Crescent Lexi Rosendahl, First Princess Becca Covey, Second Princess Morgan Cardosi and Spirit of Fest Melissa Edgar. Jonsgaard presented Rosendahl with a $1,250 scholarship check, while Covey and Cardosi were both awarded $750 scholarships.

Jonsgaard also introduced the 2017-18 royalty of Miss La Crescent Natalie Elsen, First Princess Emma Booth and Second Princess Paige Jansen. Jonsgaard presented all three of them with empty photo books, meant to be filled with memories from their time as Applefest royalty.

An overview of Applefest’s yearly financial report was then given by Treasurer Tammy Stremcha. She said Applefest assets hovered around $50,000 to end the year, which Stremcha said was just a bit lower than it was last year, due to the extra expenses in 2017.

The last honor of the evening went to Dohnalik, a long-time Applefest volunteer, who was given the President’s Award by Jonsgaard.

“(Dohnalik) has always put her best foot forward to help in any manner she’s been able to,” Jonsgaard said. “She’s done the best for the fest year after year, and have taken committees when board numbers have been low, and always lent a helping hand whether it be bartending or setting up a donation.”

To conclude the meeting, which was held at the American Legion Post 595 hall, no new executive board members were assigned, as it remained unchanged from 2017. Volunteers from the crowd were welcomed to the Applefest board after motions for their addition were approved. The new board members appointed at the meeting were Angie Rudert, Jill Morken, Kandice Larson, Anna Petrusic and Ryan Wieser.

“It goes by so quickly,” Jonsgaard said of the Applefest festivities. “I’m lucky enough to be able to embark on this journey again with the support of the board, a new royalty which I know will represent La Crescent well, and of course our amazing supportive alumni, who come back year after year to help us out. Words aren’t even enough to thank you guys. And I look forward to a great 2018 Appplest.”

This year’s Applefest will take place Sept. 13-16.
