The La Crescent-Hokah Board of Education’s has voted to reappoint Nate Byom as board chairman 2018.
Byom, who served as chair for 2017, was nominated to continue the role at the board's organizational meeting last Wednesday. He was the only board member nominated and was unanimously backed to continue in his role.
Also approved for extensions at the meeting were Vice Chair Wade Welper, Clerk Jill Rodeberg and Treasurer Kent Summerfield. Byom, Welper and Summerfield all have terms expiring at the end of this year.
The remainder of the meeting was spent wrapping up last year’s business and setting up shop for this year. Superintendent Kevin Cardille informed the board that the district has spent about 40 percent of this year’s budget, which he said is right where the district should be.
The district is currently in the process of hiring a full-time business manager, with the application window ending this week after being open for the past month. Cardille said about six or seven completed applications have been submitted for the position, with most of the applicants having business management and accounting experience, and some of them having worked in schools. Cardille and the district office staff will start the interview process early next week, with the goal of hiring someone by the first week of February.
An updated pupil enrollment chart was displayed, with a current school enrollment at 1,131.
“If we can maintain that 1,130, we’re in good shape,” Cardille said of enrollment.
“And we’re consistently rising in the elementary level,” added Byom, referring to the chart.
