La Crescent-Hokah Community Education and Appleseed Community Theatre have teamed up to present the production of Junie. B Jones The Musical, which will be showing Saturday Jan. 27 and Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. at the La Crescent High School Fine Arts Auditorium.
Created by Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich, Junie B. Jones The Musical is an adaptation of four of Barbara Park’s best-selling books brought to life in a comical and not-strictly-for-kids musical developed by TheatreworksUSA.
The production is centered around the sassy Junie. B Jones and her first day of the first grade, in the big transition from kindergarten. The show follows Junie B. as she has a falling out with her best pal, makes friends with the new kid and friendly cafeteria lady, struggles to read the blackboard and diaries in her “Top-Secret Personal Beeswax Journal”.
“Things really change from kindergarten to the first grade,” said director Krissa Valentine-Harnish, who said the show is geared more towards younger children, but meant for all ages to enjoy. “So there’s a lot of new experiences that she has to navigate through.”
For the Appleseed Theatre’s winter show, she said they choose a production for kids that can be performed by adults. The actors in the show range from age 15-40.
“It’s a fun show,” she said. “The music is jazzy and fun, and it’s all really upbeat.”
Those attending should expect to see a lot of singing and dancing in the one-act production, that will run for about an hour. Tickets can be purchased online at brownpapertickets.com, or by calling the Community Education department at 507-895-5150.
