A new course layout over the hilly Eastwood Golf Course in Rochester that was reported to be over 120 meters longer than the 5000 meters billed, combined with excessive heat, led to some slow times at the Mayo Cross-Country Invitational on Sept. 14.
Injuries and illness cost the La Crescent boys its top three runners, and they slid to an 18th-place finish. The Lancer girls managed a 22nd-place showing.
The boys race was supposed to feature a showdown between La Crescent's Matt Steiger and Stillwater’s Addison Stansbury, but Stillwater opted to hold their top seven runners out of the race in lieu of racing over the weekend in Des Moines, Iowa. Steiger dropped out of the race within the first half-mile due to foot pain. With Camdan Nolop sitting out the meet due to a leg injury, and Cole Fechner running the “C” race as he returns to full strength, that left Thomas Lechnir as La Crescent’s top finisher. Lechnir placed 67th in the 184-runner field with a time of 18 minutes, 37 seconds. Dane McCormick (19:00) finished in 83rd-place, Austin Embke placed 109th (19:36) and Andrew Jaquette (19:38) finished110th. Bryce Duffy and Jake Boudreau finished less than one second apart in 118th and 119th.
A total of 487 points left the Lancer boys in 18th place out of the 27 complete teams, however, only one Class A team, Plainview-Elgin-Millville, finished ahead of La Crescent — with the other 16 teams that bettered the Lancers all being from the class above.
The girls field was slightly smaller than the boys, with 24 complete teams and 162 runners — but La Crescent was unable to place a runner in the top 100. Katy Steffes was the Lancers' top finisher in 110th place at 24 minutes, eight seconds. The rest of the team was spread as they were unable to maintain any packs during the race — with Ashley Muenzenberger (25:23) 134th, Riley Von Arx (26:33) 147th, Molly Franzose (27:28) 154th and Tatum Whitford (28:39) 159th. La Crescent ran with only the requisite five runners necessary for a team score.
With a total of 668 points, the Lancers finished ahead of Burnsville and P-E-M in the final team standings.
The Lancers fared much better in the 2500 meter “C” races. Cole Fechner won the boys race in nine minutes, 13 seconds, while Cody Kowalski (9:23) took second. Toby Whitford, Nick Wieser and Tyler Groth placed ninth through 11th-place, respectively, to propel La Crescent to the team win with 33 points. in the complete 11-team field.
Kennette Duffy finished in third-place in the girls race in 11 minutes, 30 seconds. Autumn Rabe, Lydia Rosendahl and Julia Lechnir all cracked the top-20 to assist the Lancers to a third-place team finish in the 10-team field.
After competing at Lake City on September 19, the Lancers will be travelling back up I-90 to St. Charles on Thursday, Sept. 28 for their third invitational of the season.
