The La Crescent Apple Jack’s bats came alive in Mankato this past Sunday. The team scored 13 runs against the River River Rovers and six against the Mankato Baltics.
Unfortunately, those other teams scored more. The Rovers avenged a June loss to the Jacks in La Crescent with a 28-13 victory. Mankato took the second game by a score of 16-6.
Against the Rovers, the Jacks were led by home runs from Jason “Weasel” Pericak, Benjamin “George” Deetz and Mandi “Bell Ringer” Pericak. All told, 26 Jacks reached base safely.
Against the Baltics, almost as many Jacks reached base—25—but they could only muster six runs.
Reaching base six times on the day were Weasel, Gary “Big Wease” Pericak, Bill “Ho-hum” Ohm and Steve “Whitey” Geronime. George reached five times, and Mike “Mickey” Jaquette, John “Rook” Wilke, Doug “Dog” Krugerud and Joel “Hefty “ Affeldt reached it four times. On base three times were Bell Ringer and Scott “Roman” Pechacek.
Ho-hum was the leading scorer with four aces. George and Big Wease each scored three times.
Ho-hum and Dog did the lion’s share of the pitching with assistance from Big Wease.
Newcomer Mickey said after a full day of running the bases and playing the infield, “I didn’t think, puff, that I was, puff, going to have to run, puff, so much.”
The Apple Jacks next gameswill be Saturday, July 15, in Rochester against the Roosters of Olmsted County and the Menomonie, Wisconsin, Blue Caps.

Asked why he likes playing vintage base ball, University of Wisconsin senior George, said he liked playing the game he loved in a relaxed atmosphere. “While we all want to win, Vintage Base Ball is not as intense a competition as are many other sporting activities,” he said.
The Apple Jacks Base Ball Club is a community outreach program of the La Crescent Area Historical Society and respectfully acknowledges its eminent corporate sponsor, Merchants Bank of La Crescent.
