Partly sunny skies prevailed early last Saturday during the Apple Jack’s match against the host Red Wing Crescents.
The Jacks took an early one run lead thanks to the speedy legs of Samuel “Roundabout” Deetz, who tallied three aces during the match. The Jacks prolific bats became evident in the second inning when they tallied eight aces, including two by Jason “Weasel” Pericak. The third inning was lively with both squads recording four aces each. Scott “Roman” Perchacek led the hit parade with three doubles and three aces tallied during the match.
Throughout the match the Jacks displayed a solid defense, in particular, Jon “Numbers” Jones and Mike “Mickey” Jacquette cleanly fielded short stop and second base. The fourth inning saw the Apple Jacks go down in order thanks to the catching prowess of Crescent catcher “Bubba,” who recorded all three putouts on foul tips.
The start of the fifth inning saw rain move in and Arbiter Corky “Goose” Caskell declared this would be the final inning of the match. The Apple Jacks added an insurance run in the top of the inning and then held the Crescents scoreless in the bottom thanks to the effective pitching of Dan “Skunk” Deetz. The brother combination of Paul “Swiss” Geronime and Steve “Whitey” Geronime contributed with hits, aces, and putouts in the field. A tip of cap to Jim “Scoop” Schupbach who provided sound leadership as Captain, great hands as the first baseman, and three RBIs as a striker.
The Apple Jacks prevailed in the five inning game with a solid 14-9 victory. This ended the baseball festival generously hosted by the Red Wing Crescents as rain became heavy and the conditions too poor for safe play. The remaining three games were then canceled.
