ARCADIA/MELROSE — John “Gump” T. Proft, 55, of Arcadia and Melrose passed away due to pancreatic cancer, Thursday, Dec. 28, 2017, at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse.
He was born Aug. 17, 1962, in Black River Falls, to Jerry and Dolores Proft. John attended Melrose Grade School and graduated from Melrose-Mindoro High School in 1980. After a few different jobs, he settled into a 28 year career at Ashley Furniture in Arcadia, where he met and cherished many new friends. Being very sports minded, as the Proft family tends to be, John was active in basketball and baseball in high school and continued to be active in baseball and softball after graduation. A huge Badgers, Packers, and Brewers fan, he also loved to fish, play darts and pool, bet on the horses, and play golf. There were a few golf clubs that were known to fly through the air and out of sight.
Survivors include his mother, Dolores Proft Anderson; brother, Mike (Paula) Proft; Debbie (Tim) Kreibich; sister-in-law, Kris Proft; uncle, Orea Erickson; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many great friends.
John was preceded in death by his father, Jerry Proft; brother, Pete Proft; stepfather, David Anderson; grandparents; and many aunts and uncles.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018, at Melrose United Methodist Church, 101 Douglas St., Melrose. A private burial will be held at a later date. A visitation to celebrate John’s life will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred and will be donated to charities and organizations that were important to John. Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Homes and Crematory, Jostad Chapel, West Salem, is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be sent at www.jandtfredrickson.com.
It would mean a lot to “Gump” to see everyone in their favorite Badgers, Packers, or Brewers apparel.
