MELROSE, Wis. — Dorothy Bell (Heffernan) Schroeder, 98, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2017, at Atrium Post Acute Care Center, Black River Falls. She was a resident there since 2014, until she had complications from the flu. She had formerly resided at the River Grove Apartments of Black River Falls since 2003.
Dorothy was born June 30, 1918, in Melrose. Her parents were Stephen and Myrtle (Shilling) Heffernan, raising nine children. She was married to Richard J. Schroeder Aug. 11, 1937. They moved to a small farm east of Melrose and raised four children, who attended school in Melrose.
Dorothy is survived by a brother, Dallas Heffernan; two sisters, Gloria Hulett (Donald), Phyllis Geiske (Russell); a sister-in-law, Kathy Heffernan; her children, Richard C. Schroeder (Ruth), Nancy Houk (Gerald), Dennis Schroeder (Linda); her grandchildren, Jennifer Olson (Matthew), Bradley Schroeder, Jere Polmatier (Glen), Kim Houk; her great-grandchildren, Logan, Taylor and Mason Schroeder and Madelyn Olson. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and their children.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, Darrell Schroeder; brothers, Donald Heffernan (Ella Mae), Delroe Heffernan; and sisters, Belva Rebro (Mike), Lilah Olson (Norman) and Virginia Ball (Clayton).
A celebration of life will be held at noon Saturday, March 11, 2017, at Zwickey Funeral Homes, Melrose Chapel.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the funeral home.
Private burial is planned for later this spring.
