I have heard the comment, “Mother Nature has the best box of crayons and my favorite color is October.” Lovely sentiments. But close on its heels are the “watch out for pumpkin spice flavor jokes.” I was taking it all in stride until I saw someone had mentioned there was Pumpkin Spice Cheerios. Seriously?
Then you have the person who thought they were funny when they posted that the Countdown to Christmas is 83 days, 14 hours, 6 minutes and 51 seconds. I love Christmas, but I just don’t want to hear that right now.
It’s been one of those up and down weekends again. The up was having Cousin Greg Martens from Elgin come up for a weekend at the Smagacz family farm (which boasts a neat farm sign, thanks to my bro and sister-in-law) and inviting him and my brother Jim over for supper. We enjoyed some good visiting, and had an opportunity to talk (and sing to) our Aunt Rosemarie Smagacz who celebrated her 90th birthday that day.
The down was having one of my spells during the night and spending most of Sunday wiped out energy-wise. Hate it when that happens, especially when I end up having to miss events that I had hoped to get to. Hope the dinner and concert at Taylor Lutheran Church was successful, and sorry I couldn’t be there.
The Jackson County Bird Group got a treat when they met at Darrel and Marilyn Eberhardt’s house this past week. After the meeting, the crisp fall day was perfect for a hayride. Afterward, they enjoyed a fall treat of apple crisp and freshly-made apple cider.
It was a wonderful day for the Plow Day at Lien Implement on Sept. 30. It was a great turnout with 15 tractors that got the job done. The weather was perfect, and this year’s new event of tractor rides went over well.
There were lots of well-fed people after the opening of Sharon’s Hixton Café this past week. The fish fry on Friday was well-attended and Sharon Soppa and her family sure were appreciative of the turnout. I myself can’t wait to try a piece of one of Sharon’s famous pies.
Our area was well represented as our local queens and floats participated in the Oktoberfest parade in La Crosse.
My nocturnal wanderer told me he had the privilege of seeing them reopen the interstate bridge on Monday morning — a couple of days ahead of schedule. Will be nice not having to try to remember to go the round-about way to get to town anymore.
The Jackson County Aging and Energy Offices will be taking applications for energy assistance for the elderly and disabled. Locally they will be at the Taylor Community Center on Friday, Oct. 13 at 1 p.m. and at the Northfield Legion Hall on Monday, Nov. 13 at 1 p.m.
Before you know it, it will be time for the HYO Halloween Party on Oct. 31 at Village Hall. Lots of games, prizes and fun. Start thinking about how you are going to be decorating your pumpkins. We have had some clever entries in the past, and with categories and prizes for all ages, it is a great family project as well. Winners will be announced at the end of the party.
