INDEPENDENCE — The Melrose-Mindoro High School boys basketball team received strong performances — double-doubles, in fact — from Drew Blaken and Jimmy Polenz to beat Independence 65-49 in a Dairyland Conference game Tuesday, Jan. 16.
The win pushed the Mustangs’ Dairyland-Large-leading record to 7-0, and overall mark to 8-3.
The Mustangs built a 30-23 lead by halftime, then outscored the Indees by nine in the second half. Blaken was a big part of that, as he hit 10 of 22 field-goal attempts to finish with 22 points, as was Polenz, who drained 6 of 10 attempts for 14 points. Blaken completed his double-double with 10 rebounds, while Polenz grabbed a team-high 12. Andrew Scafe was strong on the boards, too, as he pulled down nine rebounds in addition to his six points.
Connor Christopherson and Scafe each dished out four assists for Melrose-Mindoro, which has won two of its last three games. The Mustangs have a big game on Tuesday, Jan. 23, when they host Coulee Conference leader Black River Falls (8-4). Black River Falls has won five straight games.
