LA CROSSE/BANGOR — Anthony “Tony” D. Althoff, 39, of La Crosse, formerly of Bangor passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, Oct. 14, 2013.
He was born Oct. 27, 1973, in La Crosse to Thomas and Judith (Schaller) Althoff. Tony, affectionately referred to as ‘The Gentle Giant,’ was very loving, outgoing, joyful and always full of smiles. It never took Tony long to make a new friend and very soon knew every detail about them, which he rarely forgot. He always had something nice to say and noticed even the smallest of things. Tony will be dearly remembered for his great sense of humor and the biggest and best hugs.
Tony was employed by and loved working for Riverfront of La Crosse for most of his adult life. Riverfront provided him with many wonderful co-workers and friends that he considered to be part of his family.
Survivors include his parents, Tom and Judy Althoff of Bangor; three brothers, Sam of St. Paul, Minn., Nick (Desiree) of Rockland, and Charlie of Minneapolis, Minn.; his paternal grandmother, Delores Althoff of Bangor; one niece, Mariah Althoff of Rockland; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. He was also blessed with a second family who lovingly cared for him, Lin Holm of La Crosse and Eric Holm of Bangor; as well as his special friends, Lise Johnson, Joe Wells, and Beth Plummer.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Stacey Althoff; his paternal grandfather, George Althoff; his maternal grandparents, Paul and Margaret “Greta” Schaller; and several other family members.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 303 S. 16th St., Bangor, officiated by Father Bob Hegenbarth. A visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass at 11 on Saturday with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Homes and Crematory, Bangor, is in charge of arrangements.
