Marv Friedewald, 76, of La Crosse died on Thursday, June 24, 2010, at the Hillview Health Care Center after a long illness.
Marv was born on Aug. 16, 1933, in Wauwatosa, Wis., to Roy and Evelyn (Stampa) Friedewald. On April 15, 1961, he married Annette Belzer at St. Eugene’s Catholic Church in Fox Point, Wis. Marv graduated from North Division High School in Milwaukee in 1951. He then served in the U.S. Army as an Airborne Trooper. In 1959 he graduated from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a degree in accounting. He began his career in business at the Marine Bank in Milwaukee and served as building manager of Marine Plaza and as an officer of Midland National Bank.
In 1965 he returned to school and received an MBA at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He began his college teaching career at Gustavus Adolphus College, continuing at Carroll College until coming to Viterbo University in 1976 where he was instrumental in establishing a business major. Marv served as the Business Department chairman and associate professor until his retirement in 2000. Marv found his passion in teaching and mentoring students. The best years of his working life were spent at Viterbo. His lasting friendships with the Franciscan sisters, fellow faculty members and students had been a most important part of his life. As much as he enjoyed being in the classroom, he equally enjoyed his role as Faculty Athletic Representative for 24 years. At Viterbo, Marv received Service Awards in 1989 and 1992, the Sister Helen Elsbernd Award in 1999 and Faculty Emeritus in 2000. He was inducted into the Viterbo Athletic Wall of Fame in 1992.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Annette; a son, Thomas (Deree) and their son, Samuel, of Aix en Provence, France; daughters, Kari Friedewald of Portland, Ore., and Lisa (Terry) Denney and their daughters, Brianna, Brooke, Koty and Kiara, of West Salem; along with his extended family and many close friends.
The Friedewald family is grateful for the many people whose friendships have been so important during Marv’s illness. We thank the many members of the staff at Hillview for their care and support of Marv and Annette.
Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 11, at San Damiano Chapel on the Viterbo University Campus.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Marv and Annette Friedewald Scholarships at Viterbo University or the National Parkinson’s Association.
Schumacher–Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse is assisting the family with arrangements.
