ONALASKA — Melba M. Knox, 83, of Onalaska died on Monday, Aug. 23, 2010, at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center. She was born on Sept. 23, 1926, in Houston County, Minnesota, to Roy and Martha (Kumpf) Meitrodt.

She married Tom Knox on Jan. 19, 1952, in Winona, Minn.

Melba taught elementary school in various cities in Southern Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. In 1969 the family moved to Onalaska and she began a career in administration at UW–La Crosse, retiring in 1988. She was an active member of the Onalaska United Methodist Church and volunteered at the Onalaska food bank.

She is survived by her husband, Tom; two daughters, Kristen Knox of Kirkland, Wash. and Ann Coffou of Marlborough, Mass.; three grandchildren, Charles, Martha and Anders; one sister, Jarla Pawelski of Sun Prairie, Wis.; and one brother, Wayne (Ardis) Meitrodt of Rochester, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son-in-law, John Coffou; and a sister, Bernice Schmitz.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 30, at  Onalaska United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jenny Arneson will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to  Onalaska United Methodist Church or the Franciscan Skemp Cancer Center. The Schumacher–Kish Funeral Home of Onalaska is assisting the family with arrangements.
