SPARTA — Joyce A. Higley, 73, of Sparta, died Thursday, April 25, 2013, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.
She was born on Dec. 18, 1939, in Reedsburg, Wis., to Levi (Laffie) and Nancy (Austin) James. They lived in various places around the Reedsburg area.
She met the late Harland Higley in 1958, and they married in Dubuque, Iowa, on Oct. 13, 1958. They lived in Poynette, Wis., until 1965, and then moved to the Sparta area where they resided for the last 48 years.
Joyce was an excellent artist and enjoyed painting items for her family. She also enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling and card playing. Her greatest pleasure came from spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Joyce is survived by her children, Timothy (Debra) Higley of Sparta, Korrina (Dennis) Craig of Bangor, Brenda (Barry) Clark of Sparta, Toni (Scott) Kvalheim of Sparta, Harland (Tami) Higley of Colby, and Penny Higley of Black River Falls; 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. She leaves her loving memories to be cherished by her brothers, sisters, and in-laws along with many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 50 years, Harland; a son, Burton “Chuck”; and two brothers, Douglas James, and Daniel James.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home, Sparta, with the Reverend Cassandra M. Sauter officiating.
