Franklin P. Bronk

WINONA, Minn. - Franklin P. Bronk, 73, of Winona passed away on Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, at his home, surrounded by his family.

He was born on March 13, 1935, in Minnesota City, Minn., to George and Monica (Marsolek) Bronk. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Ann Klosowski on June 1, 1957, at St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church, Winona.

Franklin was a graduate of Winona Cotter High School class of 1953. He was a lifelong farmer on Stockton Hill and, since 1947, enjoyed growing produce and selling it to various area grocers. He enjoyed many outdoor activities including deer hunting, trout fishing and gardening. Franklin enjoyed going to auctions of any kind, especially livestock auctions. His family was very important to him and he also enjoyed spending time with his faithful companion, his dog, Scooby.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Winona.

Franklin is survived by his children, Richard (and special friend Joyce Kukuzke) Bronk, Robert Bronk, Roger (Carolee) Bronk, Leon (Mary) Bronk, Barbara (Richard) Angst, Paul (Dawn) Bronk, Susan Walter, Timothy (Nikki) Bronk, Marie (Roger) Anderson and Mark Bronk; grandchildren, TJ (Charlotte) Bronk, Matt Wise, Ryan Angst, Jessica Angst, Jeffery Walter, Erica Walter, Brady Anderson, Hunter Bronk, Brittany Anderson and Walker Bronk; brothers and sisters, Joyce (Dale) Grabarkiewicz, Rita (Curt) Brasket, George James (Sheila) Bronk, Jane Rolbiecki, John (Diane) Bronk, Catherine (David) Engler, Patrick (Jean) Bronk and Phyllis (Robert) Schoen; uncle Fr. Phillip Bronk; and aunts, Mary Maule (his Godmother), Agatha Marsolek and GeorgeAnn Bronk; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Monica; and by his wife, Dorothy on Nov. 14, 1997.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Winona.

The Rev. William M. Becker will officiate with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home where a 7:30 p.m. Christian Wake Service will be held. Visitation will also be from 9 a.m. Wednesday until the Mass in the commons of St. Mary's Church.

Pallbearers will be Robert Bronk, TJ Bronk, Ryan Angst, Brady Anderson, Leon Bronk, Jeffery Walter, Patrick Rolbiecki and Greg Bronk. Honorary pallbearers will be Jessica Angst, Erica Walter, Hunter Bronk, Brittany Anderson, Walker Bronk and Matt Wise.

Herbert Alvin Mettler

Herbert Mettler, 80, of La Crosse passed away Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at Hillview Healthcare Center. He was born in Amery, Wis., on Nov. 13, 1928, to Howard and Stella (Sallander) Mettler. He married Ona Lee in Ontario on Nov. 12, 1950. Herbert served in the South Pacific for the United States Navy during World War II. He retired after 38 years of working as a welder for Trane Company. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and most of all cutting wood. Herbert was a former board member of Arrowhead Bible Camp. He was a volunteer for "Meals on Wheels", the ski team for Bethany Evangelical Free Church and volunteered his time doing maintenance work for the church. Herbert was a huge Wisconsin sports fan who loved playing board games with his sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ona; a daughter, Janet (Gary) Higbee of Des Moines, Iowa; two sons, Russell (Terri) Mettler of Rochester, Minn., and Larry (special friend, Mary Jambois) Mettler of La Crosse; two sisters, Marcile McDowell of La Crosse, and Fern Larson of Sparta; seven grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sixteen step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Glen; and three sisters, Helen Smaley, Lucile Mattson and Mildred Lundgren. He was also preceded in death by his favorite dog, Kelsey.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bethany Evangelical Free Church, 3936 CTH B, La Crosse. Reverend Corey Sateren will officiate and burial with military honors will be in Mormon Coulee Memorial Park Cemetery, La Crosse. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 1425 Jackson St., and again from 10 a.m. Tuesday until the time of services at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Arrowhead Bible Camp.

Kathryn A. Groothuis

Kathryn A. Groothuis, 90, of Tomah, Wis., passed away Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008 at the Serenity Hospice House in Tomah.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Tomah with the Rev. William Rice officiating. Burial will follow in the Viroqua Cemetery in Viroqua, Wis. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Torkelson Funeral Home in Tomah and one hour prior to the service Wednesday. Torkelson Funeral Home of Tomah is assisting the family with arrangements. MERRILLAN, Wis. - Sequoia C. Yurske, 3 months, of Merrillan died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Buswell Funeral Home, Black River Falls. Family and friends are invited for visitation from noon Tuesday until the time of services at the funeral home. SPARTA - DeWitt "Sonny" Becker, 73, of Sparta died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, in his home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lanham-Miller Funeral Home, Sparta. Burial will be in Farmers Valley Cemetery, rural Sparta. Family and friends are invited to call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. Wednesday until the time of services, both at the funeral home.
