BLACK RIVER FALLS -- Harriet J. Thompson, 92, of Black River Falls, died Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016, at Pine View Care Center in Black River Falls. She was born March 30, 1924, in the town of Pigeon, Trempealeau County, Wis., to Mads and Isabelle (Haralsrud) Sletteland. She was united in marriage to Bernard Thompson at her parents' home in Pigeon Falls August 3, 1946. He preceded her in death May 18, 1999.
Harriet graduated from Whitehall High School as the salutatorian of the class of 1942. She worked at Pigeon Falls State Bank for four years. With her husband they owned and operated Northfield Mercantile Store, while working at Fort McCoy. After moving to Black River Falls she worked as bookkeeper at Hart Tie and Lumber Company for 24 years until her retirement. She loved spending time doing Norwegian hardanger, knitting, volunteering time at the local hospital and at her church.
She is survived by her three children; Charles (Marcia Meriedth) Thompson of Evansville, Wis., David (Bonnie) Thompson of Pigeon Falls, and Kristine (Ronald) Olson of Coon Valley; seven grandchildren, JoDon, Chad, Craig (Lisa), Mark (Becca) Thompson, Tami (Matt) Koxlien, Leah (Eric) Olson-McBride and Laura (Jason) Rohowetz; and eleven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother, Chester; daughter-in-law, Gloria Thompson; and special niece, Joan Herbert.
Funeral services for Harriet J. Thompson will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 21 at Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Eric Bakken officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. Friday at the church till time of service. Pallbearers will be Harriet’s seven grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name may be made to the Church Radio Fund or to Jackson County Interfaith.
