Oktoberfest is here and while beer is the beverage of choice, it’s always a good time to celebrate Germany’s other cornerstone drink — riesling.
Thomas Schmitt is the fourth-generation head of the business that is the No. 1 importer of rieslings to the U.S. This estate-bottled selection is a Qualitätswein classification, a German designation for wine that comes from 13 specific regions, which in this case is Mosel.
Rieslings vary from bone dry to ultra-sweet and this one falls into the medium-sweet range with about a 2-to-1 sugar to acid ratio. Classic orchard fruit flavors with a crisp finish.
Sherry: “Light-bodied and semi-sweet pear and apricot with a mineral finish.” (3 stars out of 5)
Chris: “Flavors of apple, apricot, pear and a bit of honey with crisp acidity.” (3.25 stars out of 5)
Available from $12 to $15.
