The La Crosse County Health Department will begin giving H1N1 flu shots to pregnant women later this week, officials said.

The county received more injectable H1N1 vaccine Monday to set up clinics, said Traci Lien, public health nurse. Only pregnant women will be vaccinated.

Details probably will be announced today, she said, adding "we're not taking appointments or phone calls yet."

Lien said she hopes to have enough vaccine to immunize all pregnant women in the county.

Officials at Gundersen Lutheran and Franciscan Skemp say they have not received any more seasonal or H1N1 flu vaccine.

But Gundersen Lutheran officials say they have received a very limited quantity of the H1N1 Flu Mist, or live virus, vaccine.

Because the quantity is extremely small, Gundersen Lutheran officials will target a specific high-risk population for vaccination - mothers with infants younger than 6 months old and close household contacts of premature i nfants born in the past six months.

Some in this high-risk group may not be eligible for this type of vaccine due to age or pre-existing medical conditions.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported Monday the state has received 350,000 of the allotted 497,700 doses of H1N1 flu vaccine.

The department recommends health officials and providers target the H1N1 vaccine to those most at risk, including pregnant women, caretakers for infants 6 months and younger, children ages 6 months to 4 years and children with chronic medical conditions.
