A Dairy Queen Grill & Chill restaurant is expected to open in late April in the former Hardee’s restaurant at 4200 Mormon Coulee Road, in front of Shelby Mall.

It will be the 59th Dairy Queen and the ninth Wisconsin location for Bloomington, Minn.-based Fourteen Foods LLC, the nation’s largest Dairy Queen franchisee, said Matt Frauenshuh, CEO of the  franchisee.

Frauenshuh declined to reveal the price for the building purchase Monday, but said the restaurant could open in the last week of April.

Extensive remodeling began Tuesday at the building, which has been vacant since Hardee’s closed in November 2006.

The restaurant will offer the full Dairy Queen menu of meals and salads, Frauenshuh said, as well as traditional frozen soft-serve treats.

It should employ 30 to 50 people, depending on the time of year, he said.

“We are very excited to come to the city,” Frauenshuh said, noting La Crosse has no free-standing Dairy Queen location. “We thought it was a great opportunity.”

Others own the Dairy Queen restaurant in Onalaska and the combination Orange Julius/Dairy Queen in Valley View Mall in La Crosse.

The closest Fourteen Foods-owned Dairy Queen is in Caledonia, Minn.
