The 2004 Libertarian presidential candidate was hospitalized at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse on Tuesday after an apparent heart attack.
Michael J. Badnarik was fitted with a temporary pacemaker and a balloon pump to ease stress on his heart, according to Libertarian Party sources.
A Gundersen Lutheran spokesman said he could not provide any information due to patient confidentiality.
Badnarik was at a hearing on a raw milk case in Viroqua when he collapsed, said Gary Franchi, national director of Restore the Republic.
Franchi told PrisonPlanet.com that Badnarik slumped over in a friend’s car as they were leaving for lunch.
“His friends attempted CPR and contacted the paramedics,” Franchi said in an e-mail. “They attempted to revive him three times with no success. Upon the fourth attempt, his heart was revived yet with erratic behavior.”
