The state Department of Justice on Thursday identified Skyler Burnette as the Sparta man fatally shot Sunday by a Monroe County Sheriff’s deputy when he threatened a woman with a knife.

Deputies and Sparta police officers about 10 a.m. responded to a domestic violence call at 1005 St. Anne St. in Sparta, where they found Burnette, 21, armed with a knife threatening a woman’s life. Deputy Jesse Murphy shot Burnette, who died at the scene. Murphy was hired in 2006 and is on paid administrative leave pending the investigation.

The Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation continues to collect evidence and will turn over investigative reports to the Monroe County District Attorney.
