A truck driver and his dog escaped injury early Thursday when a semi caught fire in Jackson County.

Black River Falls firefighters found the semi’s cab engulfed by flames about 6:20 a.m. on Interstate 94 in town of Manchester, according to the fire department.

Authorities closed the westbound lanes while firefighter battled the blaze.

The fire did not reach the semi’s load of paper and furniture.

Semi driver Mark Ross of Marianna, Pa., reported he could smell something hot in the cab before the dash caught fire, the department stated. The truck is a total loss.

The cause of this fire remains under investigation.
