Several area schools called off classes or braced to cancel today in anticipation teachers would fail to show in response to Gov. Scott Walker's proposed budget repair bill. The La Crosse School District posted on its website late Wednesday that school would not be in session, while Holmen advised parents and students to monitor local media this morning to see if classes would meet.

Holmen, Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau, Bangor and West Salem were among local districts calling off school today.

Some districts, including Viroqua , closed because of fog, district officials said.

Educators had been encouraged to attend protests today and Friday in Madison, said Steve Glandt, executive director of Coulee Region United Educators.

"Ultimately, what we're talking about here is workers' rights," Glandt said. "Once they're done with the public workers, they'll come for the private workers as well."

The leader of Wisconsin's largest teachers union wants all state residents to join protests in Madison against bill that would strip most public workers of almost all their collective bargaining rights.

Wisconsin Education Association Council President Mary Bell did not explicitly call on teachers to skip classes but did say all Wisconsinites should look into their hearts and come to Madison today and Friday.

As of late Wednesday, Madison schools planned to close for a second consecutive day today. The Oregon School District also had decided to close because of expected absences.

Glandt said he thinks the La Crosse area will be well represented in Madison.

"This has nothing to do with balancing the budget," Glandt said. "It has everything to do with whittling away the middle class and ending workers' rights in the state."
