David Kalina

Criminal charges filed Thursday accuse a La Crosse man of abducting an 11-year-old boy on New Year’s Eve.

A La Crosse County sheriff’s deputy found the boy unharmed in David Kalina’s truck about 11 p.m. Dec. 31 as it was headed toward Interstate 90 from Hwy. 16, according to the complaint filed in La Crosse County Circuit Court.

Kalina, 46, had a 0.15 percent preliminary blood-alcohol concentration at the jail.

The boy’s mother called police at 10 p.m. Dec. 31 after Kalina left the apartment buildings at 401 N. Gillette St. on the North Side with her son in his truck.

The victim told authorities Kalina lured him to his truck by showing off his remote start and that he told Kalina he did not want to return home because he wanted to escape “all the noise,” according to the complaint.

The boy said the truck at one point got stuck in a ditch and that he told Kalina he was ready to go home.

Kalina told police the boy’s father gave him permission to take him, the complaint stated.

Prosecutors charged Kalina, who also lives at 401 N. Gillette St., with child abduction, false imprisonment and second-offense operating while intoxicated and with a prohibited alcohol concentration.
