As the new year arrives, so does a new snow removal contract for the city of La Crosse.
The Board of Public Works Tuesday accepted a bid from Midwest Roll-Off to remove snow at $2 per lineal foot.
City ordinance requires snow to be removed from public walkways within 24 hours after the snow ceases to fall.
If residents and business owners don’t take care of it themselves, the city will ensure it gets done and pass along the bill to the property owner.
The entire sidewalk must be clear down to the pavement to allow pedestrians to pass, according to Doug Kerns, who runs the program for the city’s Engineering Department.
“It’s really important to be a good neighbor and clear your walk,” Kerns said.
People are able to access free sand and salt at the city’s fire stations, as well as on Marcou Drive on Isle La Plume.
Correcting the common misconception, Kerns reminded the public, “There are no warnings.”
