MADISON — The Detroit Lions player accused of insulting members of the University of Wisconsin Marching Band on Sunday has apologized and offered a financial donation to the band, the team and player said in statements.

“My interaction with the Wisconsin Marching Band was inappropriate,” Lions center Dominic Raiola said in his statement. “I apologize to those I offended along with all of the members of Wisconsin’s Marching Band.”

The team said Raiola called Mike Leckrone, longtime director of the band, on Tuesday afternoon to apologize and offer the donation for an unspecified amount of money.

The actions by Raiola prompted the Lions to stop their investigation of the incidents that occurred before and during Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers.

He won’t be disciplined further, team president Tom Lewand said.

In a Sunday Facebook post, UW band member Zach York accused Raiola of making verbal insults, some sexual in nature, prior to the Green Bay Packers’ 22-9 win over the Lions.

Leckrone said five or six band members told him during the game that Raiola verbally abused them while standing in the end zone at the end of their pregame performance.

Six to eight other band members who overheard Raiola’s tirade offered similar versions, he added.

The band performed before the game and at halftime.

Raiola, whose brother Donovan played center at UW from 2002 to 2005, is a veteran center who played college football at the University of Nebraska.

He was drafted by the Lions in 2002 and has spent his entire NFL career with the team.

This is a great example to set. *sarcasm* One can buy themselves the ability to act anyway they want. Shame on the UW-L leadership for accepting this (the bribe) as much as the Lions and the NFL for allowing this behavior to go unpunished because the overpaid child can write a check. This is just another example of why the stereotype of the stupid, egotistical pro athlete exists.
