MADISON — Two weeks after Republicans who control the state Assembly voted to create anti-abortion license plates that say “Choose Life,” Democrats have introduced a proposal to create plates that say “Support Planned Parenthood.”

The measure is sponsored by Democratic state Rep. Chris Taylor, of Madison. She is a former public policy director for Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin.

Taylor’s bill was introduced Monday and referred to the Assembly’s Transportation Committee. The bill is likely to die in committee. The panel’s chairman, Republican Rep. Keith Ripp, has a 100 percent approval rating with anti-abortion group Wisconsin Right to Life. Taylor’s ranking is 0 percent.

Two weeks ago the Assembly voted to create the “Choose Life” plates, with the money raised going to a corporation newly formed by anti-abortion groups.

The state should not be collecting and funneling money to any corporations. If a person wants to donate money and show support for a cause, buy a bumper sticker from them. The legislature should be working to solve real problems this state has.

The money isn't being diverted to religious groups; the money will be going to pregnancy centers which are not all 'religious' and they help women who are either pregnant or already have babies/children. They give food, clothing, diapers, etc. if that's 'religious' so be it.

I love when there are overwhelming problems in everyone's lives our lawmakers still find time for bickering and petty fights.

Unfortunately the Republican bill allowing the "Choose Life" plates diverts money that would normally go into the tax stream for roads into religious groups.

"Political advertising on the taxpayers $$$$"

Last I checked, the vehicle owner, not the taxpayer, pay for license plates.
