Only a groundhog can get cheers out of a freezing crowd, even if the freeze lasts another six weeks.
Jimmy the Groundhog, the most famous weather woodchuck this side of Pennsylvania, saw his shadow at sunrise in Sun Prairie Friday morning, the vision meaning we will have six more weeks of winter.
(If you follow the calendar, winter actually ends in six weeks and five days, but that's too technical for this story.)
Jimmy gave his prognostication at Cannery Square, where a crowd of onlookers gathered to see Jimmy see his shadow.
This was the 70th annual Groundhog Day ceremony in Sun Prairie. The most famous, or infamous, ceremony took place in 2015, when Sun Prairie Mayor Jonathan Freund was bitten on the ear by Jimmy.
Officials took no chances of that happening again. Mayor Paul Esser leaned down to hear Jimmy's prognostication while Jimmy stayed in his cage.
