The Way it Was: 1941 speed skating spectators

This scene, captured by the late Gordon Feinberg (1915-1990) of La Crosse, shows spectators gathered outside the old warming house in Pettibone Park during the 1941 National Outdoor Speed Skating Championships held Jan. 25-26, 1941, at Pettibone Lagoon. This frame warming house, erected in 1939, was removed in 2000 during a controlled burn by the La Crosse Fire Department.

This frame warming house, erected in 1939, was removed in 2000 during a controlled burn by the La Crosse Fire Department and its former site is now occupied by a stone picnic shelter.
