Just a bit of sadness. Having a bad day. Just snap out of it. These are things often told to those who struggle with mental illnesses, such as depression.

The truth of the matter is, however, that depression is a real condition and more than just everyday sadness. Depression can take someone from being a fully functioning member of society to absolute misery, the kind of misery that can even lead to death by suicide.

There is a stigma attached to mental illness — some think those people are crazy or that all of their problems are in their head. While it’s true the problems are “in their head,” mental illness is a serious issue that needs to be talked about more often with open ears and open hearts.

Those with mental illness are not “crazy.” They have a sick brain — just as you can have a sick heart. And they shouldn’t be singled out and looked down upon.

We didn’t ask for sickness, as I’m sure neither did you. We only ask for compassion and understanding as we journey through life, just like you, on our slightly different path.
