A Big Bend man was arrested Monday night after he fired a handgun into the air while showing it to friends in Prairie du Chien.

The incident happened in the parking lot of Microtel Motel, 1833 S. Marquette Road, Prairie du Chien police said.

Kevin Winegarden, 47, was tentatively charged with endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon, and third offense possession of marijuana.

Police said Winegarden was showing a 9-millimeter handgun to his friends, then pointed it into the air and fired a round.

"After further investigation, it was determined Winegarden was intoxicated," said Police Chief Chad Abram.

A preliminary breath test showed a .12 blood alcohol concentration, police said.

No injuries were reported.

Police were assisted at the scene by the Crawford County Sheriff's Office and the MarMac Unified Police Department.
