MISHICOT -- Steven Avery, the Wisconsin man who served 18 years in prison for a rape he did not commit, may be the last person to have seen a 25-year-old photographer who disappeared this week, a sheriff said Saturday.
Friends and family fanned out Saturday across Manitowoc County looking for Teresa Marie Halbach, a resident of the St. John area, who disappeared Monday afternoon.
Halbach, a freelance photographer for auto-sale advertising, was taking pictures of vehicles up for sale before she vanished, authorities said.
Avery, the Two Rivers man who was released from prison in 2003 after DNA evidence exonerated him in the 1985 attack, told investigators Thursday evening that Halbach took pictures of a van that he wants to sell.
Avery and another man in the area are the last to have seen Halbach, but it's unclear who saw her last, said Calumet County Sheriff Jerry Pagel.
"I'm classifying it as coincidental at this particular time," Pagel said.
