According to Michael Phelan of Social Security Works, an advocacy group for Social Security, the House of Representatives voted on a so-called balanced budget amendment on April 12. This group says the amendment is nothing more than a scheme by Speaker Paul Ryan to force dangerous cuts to earned benefits, and enshrine those cuts in our Constitution. It goes on to point out that 233 members of Congress voted for this "attempt to steal Social Security’s $2.8 trillion surplus" and force automatic cuts.”
Of the 233 votes in favor of the amendment, 228 were Republicans. Rep. Ron Kind of La Crosse was one of only five Democrats to vote in favor.
That vote is disappointing and is counter to what Kind says, specifically, that he supports and protects Social Security. It sounds to me like he and the majority party are trying to steal from our Social Security benefits to pay for tax breaks that benefit the wealthiest in our nation.
Fortunately, the vote failed, but there likely be more attacks on our earned Social Security benefits, and it’s apparent that we need someone other than Kind to represent us.
