Finally, enough determined U.S. senators have joined to present a bipartisan bill to the Senate Judiciary Committee called “the Special Counsel Independence and Integrity Act” to protect the Mueller investigation.
The bill stipulates that the special counsel can only be fired with good cause.
The Mueller investigation is examining Russian influence during the last election, which Donald Trump surprisingly won.
A grand jury has already indicted several Russians, and work of the special counsel needs to continue unimpeded.
Senators of both parties want to be sure that special counsel Mueller will not be fired on a whim. While this bill is prepared specifically for this investigation, it will protect all future special counsel investigations of both parties. This legislation is long overdue.
These senators remember when President Richard Nixon fired Archibald Cox. This led to a constitutional crisis and the ultimate resignation of President Nixon. These senators want to be sure the investigation is completed without interruption.
Some Republicans do not want this bill to go forward for fear that collusion will be found between the Trump campaign and the Russian influence that is being identified.
Now is the time to urge senators of both parties to support this legislation. Tell both Wisconsin senators, Ron Johnson and Tammy Baldwin, to support this legislation and co-sign the bill to be sure it is brought to a vote on the Senate floor.
