The La Crosse area recently lost a brilliant and beloved teacher with the death of Brady Olson.
Some 1,400 people came to his visitation, all with stories to tell about the outsize role this big man played in their lives.
Brady made teaching his career when he could have chosen more lucrative fields because he knew he was developing character as well as careers.
Meanwhile, we have a state budget showing an increase in per-pupil spending. This is actually a fractional return of what has been taken from public schools.
And Wisconsin is close to giving almost $3 billion to Foxconn, a multinational company with a shameful record of mistreating employees and polluting the environment. Jurisdictions around the country have found themselves deep in debt after corporations like Foxconn took the incentives and left.
Educating hearts and minds as Brady Olson did pays off. Feeding fat-cat corporations may or may not.
