I was upset to see Republican U.S. Senate candidate Kevin Nicholson claim that veterans who support Democrats are lacking in “cognitive” abilities.

When I served in Vietnam, I didn’t know the political views of the soldier standing next to me -- all we knew was that we were putting our lives on the line to serve our country.

In Vietnam, we came from all walks of life. In fact, I entered the service a moderate Republican, who admired figures like Dwight Eisenhower, Margaret Chase Smith and Nelson Rockefeller.

Over time, I used my “cognitive abilities” that Nicholson has now insulted to discover that the Republican Party as I knew it had changed, and I found a new home in the Democratic Party.

The truth is that Democrats do support veterans -- the Democratic Party is the party of veterans because it’s the party of the many, not the few.

Kevin Nicholson should know better than to tear down his fellow veterans and question our patriotism in order to advance his political career.

It’s wrong.
