The media and especially Wisconsin Public Radio must surely carry a large share of the responsibility for the current events at the Lincoln Hills juvenile correction facility.
All month I had been hearing about the abuses of the “children’ [emphasis intended] held there. I cannot help but believe that those “junior criminals” [media emphasis intended] learned that the guards had been restrained due to the media pressure on the outside. We are now learning what these “children” are really capable of doing.
Most everyone reading this letter can surely recall the junior sociopaths from their own high school. I well remember three when I was attending the same high school with Michigan Gov. James Blanchard 60 years ago. These dispassionate, cruel individuals, who lack any empathy for others, can be found in all socio-economic classes.
Instead of directing a blanket and misplaced sympathy for those institutionalized, “upcoming sociopaths,” every effort should be made to identify and separate them from all the redeemable youth, who understand that they have made a mistake and can be reformed. Let’s be honest with ourselves, those who attack guards are not redeemable.
